Digital commerce continues to grow despite the return to physical stores after the pandemic.
Digital commerce continues to grow despite the return to physical stores after the pandemic.
June 27, 2022

The IDC stood at 58.3 points at the end of the first quarter of 2022, according to the Spark Foundry (Publicis Group) Index of Digitization of Commerce in Spain.

Spark Foundry, the media agency of Publicis Groupe, presents the results of the fifth wave of the Digitization Index of Commerce in Spain (IDC). The IDC stands at 58.3 points at the end of the first quarter of 2022, which represents an increase in digital commerce of 0.7 points compared to the previous quarter. However, this figure is lower than that of the same period in 2021, when the IDC reached 58.7 points.

December, the shopping month par excellence, falls within this period and is reason enough to explain this increase. The key lies in the evolution of the pandemic itself, since after the 2020 boom (for obvious reasons) digital commerce has become a habit, but now it has to coexist with the physical store, where localism and commerce retail take center stage again.

All types of buyers are growing

This quarter, all types of buyers are growing from the previous one, according to Spark Foundry. Curious Shoppers (those who browse the entire network when inquiring about an online product) are the ones that grew the most (+1.4 points), reaching 13.9. The Techies also increased (+1.1 points) this first quarter and stood at 14.5.

For their part, Social and Platform Shoppers also experienced growth, although more moderate, standing at 22.3 (+1) and 25 (+0.4) points respectively. As a reflection for the future, it seems that COVID-19 is already one more disease that we are going to have to live with and that it will not affect our lifestyle. This becomes a clear driver for the normalization of digital commerce that, according to forecasts, will cease in those "lurches" that we have experienced in the last periods analyzed.

In the words of Javier Zorita, Business Lead at Spark Foundry, "Despite the fact that visits to physical stores are beginning to rise again (+10%) and it is expected to continue growing in 2022, online commerce continues its positive path, that yes more stable, what we can begin to call the new commerce normality ».
